The Global Peatland Initiative (GPI) is a platform for integrated approaches and funding promoting sustainable use of the global peatlands. GPI is endorsed by the International Peat Society, the International Mire Conservation Group (IMCG), the World Union of Conservation (IUCN) and the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) is invited. GPI is global for two reasons. Peatlands are found in all parts of the world and peatland is of global environmental importance. On the global level peatlands are acknowledged as a vital part of the world's wetland resources including natural peatlands (mires) as well as semi-natural peatlands. Peatlands store some 30 percent of all terrestrial carbon and over 10 percent of the world's fresh water resources. Issues related to peatlands, which need to be addressed, are uncontrolled fires, abandonment of peatlands and unsustainable exploitation of peatlands. Moreover, there is a need for reconsidering agriculture on peatlands, the use of peat for power generation and the use of peatlands for forestry in response to globalisation and to consumer's demands for sustainable produced, i.e. certified products. In 2000 the Global Peat Initiative has received funding for developing countries and countries in transition. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands makes these funds available to Wetlands International for non-profit organizations. In this paper we provide an overview of the issues related to sustainable use of peatlands and provide an overview of the projects considered for funding.
