Determining of Fe and Mn on barren land and the top of Mount Merapi of West Sumatra

The research was carried out from June 2000 to March 2001 to determine micro elements (Fe and Mn) content of barren land and the top of mount Merapi of West Sumatra. Iron, and manganese were determined by atomic absorption spectrometric method. Iron and manganese's contents of the barren land were higher than those of the infertility and fertility regions. For each region the content of the above elements were higher in 50 cm of depth than those in surface area. Iron is relatively present in soil in higher concentration than any other micronutrient (2.68-4.78 percent). However inspite of the large amount of iron in the soil and the low quantities needed for plant growth, iron deficiency occurs because so little of element is in available form.
