Estimate of support capacity of organic pollution load in Ciujung river, West Java (Indonesia)

Since 1990 the Ciujung river in the Regency of Serang, West Java province, has been reported in the press about pollution case of riverwater by industries. The result of the study by the Research Institute for Water Resources Development during the period of 1994/1995 has shown, that the organic load flowering into the Ciujung River is estimated 9.34 ton BOD/day consist of industrial waste 0.56 ton BOD/day and domestic waste 8.78 ton BOD/day. With such a load during the dry season, when the discharge downstream the Pamarayan Dam is 2.5 cubic meter/second, has caused the decrease of dissolved oxygen content from 7.1 mg/L in the upstream to 2.9 mg/L in the downstream. When, the construction plan for the 15 industrial estates at the Ciujung River Basin are in operation, the load of waste from the industrial waste-products will increase to 17.41 ton/day. Basedupon a water quality model, if the wastewater discharge meet, while the existing effluent standards, then dissolved oxygen will decrease to be 0.78 mg/L at about 104 km from Bojongmanik at upstream area. To maintain a dissolved oxygen content, more than or equal 3.0 mg/L, the discharge at downstream Pamarayan dam will be need at least 3.5 cubic meter/second and the river can receive a maximum industrial waste load of 2.5 ton BOD/day.
