Effect of season on the physical characteristics of donkey (Equus asinus) semen

Semen samples were collected from 5 donkeys using standard stallion artificial vagina during summer, autumn and winter seasons. The semen appeared off white to creamish in colour.The gel free volume in autumn was more (P0.05) than that of summer and winter. The mass motility score in the autumn was more (P0.01) than other seasons. The pH of semen in winter and summer differed (P0.01) from that of autumn. The sperm concentration during summer was more (P0.05)than that of autumn and winter. The live sperm percentage did not differ significantly due to season. The abnormal spermatozoa differed (P0.01) in 3 seasons. There was a positive correlation (P0.05) between sperm concentration and mass motility in semen.
