Effect of dietary vitamin C and zinc supplementation on wound healing, immune response and growth performance in swine

Present experiment was conducted to study the effect of dietary supplementation of either vitamin C or vitamin C and zinc on the recovery rate of wound healing, antibody response, growth and haematobiochemical performance in castrated dermatitic pigs. Eighteen crossbred (Landracexdesi)piglets of about 2« months-old and 13.64 ñ 0.47 kg mean body weight were randomly divided into 3 groups (A,B and C ) consisting of 6 animals in each. Animals in group A (control) were fed a basal diet. In group B animals were additionally supplemented with vitamin C(50mg/animal/day)and in group C with vitamin C (50 mg/animal/day) as well as zinc sulphate (30 g/100kg of diet) along with basal diet. In 3 animals of each group, surgaical open skin wounds (approximately 3cmý) wee created at the flank region using aseptic precautions. Wound healing was 45.16, 65.84 and 76.32D% and 90.3,98.0 and 99.0% in the first and second week in group A, B and C respectively. The haemoglobin content, PCV and blood copper values after 60 days of feeding were comparable among the 3 groups. However, blood zinc level was significantly (P0.05) higher in group C. The antibody response against Pasteurella multocida was good to high in group C, moderate to good in group B and moderate in group A. The average daily gain was also significantly higher in groups B and C than control group (A). It was concluded that supplementation of zinc along with vitamin C had a positive effect on wound healing, antibody response and growth performance of the pigs.
