Sodipo, O. A.; Effraim, K. D.; Emmagun, E.
The effect of an aqueous extract of leaves of Cassia alata (collected from Ghana) on haematological indices in albino rats was studied. The extract (10, 50, 100 or 150 mg/kg, p.o., for 14 days) significantly and dose-dependently decreased the levels of haemoglobin and the erythrocyte count. In addition, increased packed cell volume, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration were also observed. Mean corpuscular haemoglobin did not show any change. Clinical symptoms of loss of appetite, emaciation and loss of weight in the treated rats indicated toxicity. The observed symptoms of toxicity are discussed in relation to the saponin content of the plant extract.
