Radical scavenging activity and antioxidant activity of liquors of myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) berries and leaves

The radical scavenging activity (DPPH test) and antioxidant activity (conductometric method and linoleic acid test) of liquors of myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) berries and leaves were evaluated by comparing them with well-known red wines, synthetic antioxidants (BHA, BHT) and a natural compound, catechin. Eight industrially-prepared liquors and three laboratory-prepared samples were investigated. The total phenolic concentration (between 0.17-1.47 mg/l) correlated well with the DPPH test (r = 0.939 and P0.0001) and the conductometric test (r 0.05). The samples with a higher phenolic content showed higher free radical scavenging activity and antioxidant activity, which was notable for the two berry liquor samples. The red wine samples had higher activity in the conductometric test and good activity in the other tests. At the same polyphenol concentration, the red wine samples showed the best protection against fatty acid oxidation, comparable to that of BHA, while samples of the berry liquors showed a higher protection than the leaf liquor samples. In the antiradical test, both berry and leaf liquors demonstrated the highest activity with respect to the red wines and the synthetic antioxidants

In questo lavoro sono state confrontate l'attività antiradicalica (DPPH test) e l'attività antiossidante (metodo conduttometrico e test dell'acido linoleico) di liquori ottenuti da bacche e da foglie di mirto (Myrtus communis L.) con quelle di campioni di vino rosso, di antiossidanti sintetici (BHA, BHT) e composti naturali come la catechina. La ricerca è stata svolta su otto liquori preparati industrialmente e su tre preparati in laboratorio. Il contenuto fenolico totale (compreso tra 0,17-1,47 mg/l) risultava essere ben correlato con il test del DPPH (r = 0,939 and P0,0001) e conduttometrico (r 0,05). I campioni con il più alto contenuto di fenoli mostrarono alte attività antiradicalica e antiossidante e ciò è evidente in due campioni di liquore di bacche. I campioni di vino rosso dimostrarono la più alta attività nel metodo conduttometrico e una buona attività negli altri test. Alle stesse concentrazioni di polifenoli, i campioni di vino mostrarono la migliore protezione all'ossidazione degli acidi grassi, comparabile con quella del BHA, mentre i liquori di bacche rivelarono una protezione più alta dei campioni di liquori di foglie. Nel test antiradicalico i liquori di bacche e di foglie dimostrarono la più alta attività nei confronti dei vini rossi e degli antiossidanti sintetici
