Qunatitative assessment of Phosphocompost and their efficacy in groundnut - wheat cropping system and soil health

An experiment on production of phosphocompost from two levels of rock phosphate (2.5 and 5.0 % P2O5) with and without (5 or 10 %)iron pyrite and its evaluation in groundnut-wheat cropping sequence was conducted for three years. The results showed that increased level of rock phosphate and iron pyrite increased the nitrogen and phosphorus content of the compost. The maximum phosphorus (3.72%) and nitrogen (1.24%) were recorded in phosphocompost prepared from 5% P2O5 through rock phosphate and 10% iron pyrite. Application of these phosphocomposts in kharif groundnut with 75% recommended dose of nitrogen through urea and growing second crop rabi wheat in succession not only replaced the phosphatic and 25% nitrogenous fertilizer requirements of groundnut but also increased the biochemical properties of the soil and crop yields of second crop from 9 to 13 and 7 to 13 per cent grain and dry matter over residual phosphatic fertilizer applied through single superphosphate. Total biomass of both the crops due to phosphocomposts was increased from 11 to 25 per cent more over inorganic fertilizers alone and 5 to 15 per cent more over equal quantity of FYM and recommended dose of fertilizers.
