Effect of calcium on water stress amelioration through calmodulin and scavenging enzymes in groundnut

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivars TPT-1 and TPT-4 seedlings treat with PEG, showed an increase in lipid peroxidation, peroxidase activity and decrease in CaM content, superoxide dimutase and catalase activities. Calcium chloride treated seedlings maintained higher levels of CaM content, SOD and CAT activities. Significantly difference were observed between cultivars and treatments, and correlation coefficient between cotyledons and embryonic axis. The results suggested that the adverse effects of PEG on membrane deterioration may be relieved by calcium chloride by modulating the lipid peroxidation and peroxidase activity and maintaining higher levels of CaM and scavenger enzymes such as SOD and CAT. The cv.TPT-4 appears to be more tolerant to water stress than the TPT-1.
