Effects of solution temperature on the growth and development of wasabi [Eutrema wasabi] grown in NFT [Nutrient film technique]

Wasabi plants were grown in NFT (Nutrient film technique) from November to mid April in two consecutive years in order to investigate the effect of solution temperature on the growth and development of wasabi. The solution temperatures were maintained at 13 deg C, 19 deg C and natural. In both of the experiment 13 deg C solution temperature produced highest number of leaves and offshoots per plant. In both years the natural temperature treatment (control) produced the least number of leaves throughout the experiment. The leaf area of 19 deg C solution temperature plants were significantly higher at the end of the first year experiment. In the second year, there was no significant difference in leaf area between treatments. In both years, roots of 19 deg C solution temperature plants excelled in terms of growth speed, volume and appearance than the other two treatments. In the second year experiment the plants of 19 deg C solution temperature produced 23.6 and 40.5% more fresh weight (7.51 g)compared to the 13 deg C and control treatment plants, respectively. It also produced 32.4 and 48.1% more total dry matter per plant (1.08 g) than 13 deg C and control solution temperature plants, respectively.
