Antimicrobial and odor-removing effects of ion exchange resin and its complexes with nonwoven cloth

Effects of a strongly basic ion exchange resin (anion IER), a strongly acidic ion exchange resin (cation IER) and its copper-or silver-bound form (Cu-or Ag-IER) were examined on the growth of the bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the fungi, Aspergillus niger and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. All resin samples showed inhibitory effects on both bacterial strains and one fungal strain, T. mentagrophytes. A. niger was inhibited only by Ag-IER. The complexes of Cu-or Ag-IER with nonwoven cloth, NWC (mean particle size of IERs; about 10 micro m, their content; about 2 - 10wt%) showed marked inhibitory effect on the viability of all tested strains including Salmonella typhimurium, MRSA and E. coli 0 157. The complex of Ag-IER and NWC (about 2wt% of Ag-IER content) remarkably reduced the number of viable cells of all examined microorganisms to levels less than their detectable limit. A preliminary application trial of using the Ag-IER NWC complex in experimental models of insoles and masks gave results indicating that the grouth inhibtory effect was maintained at least for 6 months. This complex sample showed an additional ability to remove an odor component, triethylamine, indicating various applications of its use.
