A note on the expression and heredity of monogermity in sugarbeet [Beta vulgaris]

Monogerm sugarbeets often produce a few bigerm seeds. The proportion of bigerm seeds in the total seeds harvested varies with plants both within and between breeding lines. The purpose of this study was to characterize the expression pattern and heredity of the numbers of flowers in flower clusters. Fourteen plants were selected for each of low and high rate of bigerm seeds from a variable self-incompatible monogerm breeding line. Pair-crossed progenies of the selected plants indicated that the phenotypic difference between plants selected for the low rate of bigerm seeds and those for the high rate was partly controlled by genetic factors, although the level of heredity was lower in the phenotype of the former than in the latter. The phenotype of selected plants was reevaluated in the following growing season. Most of the plants exhibited somewhat different phenotypes from those evaluated when selected, suggesting that the number of flowers in a flower cluster was easily fluctuated depending on the environmental factors. Plant vigor, light-environment and transition of growth phase from vegetative to reproductive ones were discussed as factors influencing the development of monogermity.
