Characteristics of a new sugar beet [Beta vulgaris] variety "Skane"

Characteristics of a new sugar beet variety "SKANE" are described in comparison with "JORDEN", a main triploid variety in Hokkaido Sugar Co. territory. 1. "SKANE" slightly outperformed "JORDEN" on sugar content and sugar yield, and nearly the same as "JORDEN" on root yield. 2. "SKANE" outperformed "JORDEN" on corrected sugar content, corrected sugar yield and juice impurity. 3. "SKANE" outperformed "JORDEN" on wet tolerance. 4. "SKANE"is as susceptible to Rizomania and Cercospora leaf spot as "Monohomare" and "JORDEN". 5. Root yield and sugar content of "SKANE" decreased with heavy application of nitrogen. However, a further study will be necessary to confirm the results.
