Investment of photosynthate at seed production in Quercus gilva Bl

The sexual reproductive allocation in Quercus gilva Bl. was studied to clarify the cost of reproduction at species and individual level. Significantly positive relationships were observed between DBH and the mass of fallen leaves, and between DBH and the mass of male reproductive organs. However, there was no significant relationship between DBH and the mass of female reproductive organs, or between DBH and specific costs. The results suggested that the photosynthate in Q. gilva was allocated to leaf and pollen production in relation to their size, thereafter the number of pollinated flowers regulated the number of mature seeds of individual trees. The specific cost of the reproduction in Q. gilva, which was size-independent, was significantly different among the individuals, although it was similar to that of other observed clithochore tree species.
