Therapeutic efficacy of injectable doramectin against chorioptic mange in cattle under the field condition in Japan

A study evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of doramectin against natural infestations of chorioptic mange mites was conducted on commercial farms in Hyogo prefecture. Ninety-two cattle harboring mange infestation were randomly allocated into two groups, one treated with doramectin and one receiving saline as control. The animals were subcutaneously given either 1% doramectin solution (200 micro g doramectin/kg b.w.) or saline (0.02mL/kg b.w.). Clinical observations and skin scrapings were performed immediately before treatment on day 0 and on days 14 and 28 of the treatment. The skin scrapings were examined to count live mites. Following treatment with doramectin, the lesions showed improvement in 60/65 (92.3%) animals while in the control group, the severity of lesions was reduced in only 3/27 (11.1%) animals. Treatment with doramectin reduced significantly (rho < 0.05) the number of animals infested with live mites as well as the number of live mites found in skin scrapings on day 28. From day 0 to day 28, geometric mean of live mite counts was reduced by 98.2% in the doramectin-treated group. The mites were morphologically identified as Chorioptes texanus.
