Studies on cultivation of Japanese pear [Pyrus pyrifolia] 'Gold-Nijisseiki' in the heating plastic greenhouse

To harvest Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) 'Gold-Nijisseiki' late in July, a cultivation experiment in the heating plasticgreenhouse was carried out. 1. The covering and heating from late February accelerated bud break and blooming, and the pollination time was one month earlier than that for conventional open-filed culture. Correspondingly, harvest time was also stepped forward for about one month and the fruit were picked up from late July. 2. The forcing cultivation in the heating plastic greenhouse did not affect the fruit weight, but tended to de- crease the content of sugar in the fruit slightly. 3. During 9 years for heating cultivation, crop load and fruit weight have increased steadily. This cultivation system seems tu be possible for susutained production of 'Gold-Nijisseiki1 pear. 4. Using stored pollen with over 40% of germination rate for artificial pollination induced the similar fruit pro- duction to that using fresh pollen. 5. It seems possible to produce the fruit with stable quality if the third fruit in cluster is left when thinning fruit 6. The quantity of fibrous roots of trees for heating cultivation was similar to that for conventional open-field cultivation/which may be explained by early increased soil temperature due to plastic mulching to soil until anthesis and improved soil conditions by ridging culture. 7. The simulation based on sales performance showed that a farmer might manage heating cultivation of pear trees without additional labor while maintaining the present income.
