Occurrence of tensile cracks in disturbed soils due to compression

Considering that the tensile failure generally occurs before shear failure in the material when its character changes from ductile to brittle, the disturbed soil is thought to cause a similar phenomenon due to lowering in water content. Unconfined compression tests were conducted on two soil samples (volcanic ash loam from a foundation in the actual agricultural reservoir and silt from a stock pile of an under constructed fill-type dam) in this study. The occurrence of a vertical crack or a shear crack was examined with the specimens varying water content. We confirmed in two samples that a vertical crack occurred earlier than a shear crack when water content was under a certain value. Brazilian tests were also conducted on the same samples to measure the tensile strain when tensile cracks occurred and these results were compared with the extensile strain of unconfined compression tests when vertical cracks occurred.
