A study of the utilization and supply of dairy farm manure: With respect to the supply-and-demand of feces types

We have observed that many Japanese dairy farmers have reduced their feed production and increased the size of their herds. However, they vary in how them combine the treatment, utilization and supply of manure. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the possibilities and problems associated with the promotion of the utilization and supply of manure on dairy farms in paddy areas. For this purpose, I have classified farms on the basis of supply-and-demand of feces types, farm organization characteristics, manure treatment methods, and land use systems. A classification system is used that utilizes two criteria - in-farm utilization and off-farm supply of manure - on the idea of a supply-and-demand equilibrium. In other words, I classify four farm types ; those that dump all feces on land to an in-farm destination and supply very little manure (type A), those that dump all feces on land in-farm destination and supply most of their manure (type B), those that make use of all feces in-farm and supply very little manure (type C), and those that make use of all feces to an in-farm destination and supply most of manure (type D). Based on this investigation, we can clarify the possibilities and problems for promoting the utilization and supply of manure on type A, B and C farms, through a flow chart of type A to B, type A to C, type B to D and type C to D. It is suggested that its difficult to solve feces-and-urine processing and / or use problems on dairy farms only through investment of fixed capital and processing machines and facilities.
