Effects of liming on chemical properties and microbial flora of forest soil

To clarify the effect of neutralization in forest acid soils on chemical properties and microbial flora of surface soil, an investigation was performed by liming at four different slope positions on the same slope. Four study plots were established from the lower slope to upper slope, cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) stand, cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) stand, larch (Larix teptolepis) stand and red pine (Pinus densiflora) with broad-leaved mixed stand. The supplied amounts of lime were 400, 800, and 1,600kg ha**-1 of Ca (225, 450, and 900kg ha**-1 of Mg, respectively) in each stand. The pH at a soil depth of 0 - 5cm ranged between 4.5 and 5.1 in each control stand. After liming, the pH increased over 5.5 at >= 800kg Ca ha**-1 treatment of the cedar stand, the cypress stand and the larch stand, while the maximum pH in the red pine with broad-leaved mixed stand was 5.4 at 1,600 kg Ca ha**-1 treatment. Most of the lime applied was held in a thick A sub0-layer in the red pine with broad-leaved mixed stand. The number of heterotroph and nitrate bacteria, and the amount of microbial biomass nitrogen increased in almost all stands ; however there was no correlation with inorg-N amount. This results suggested that nutrient uptake by vegetation influenced the amount of inorg-N.
