The need for international cooperation in forest conservation in Sri Lanka

The recognition that environmental and natural resource utilization in a country cause global impacts has led to the need for international cooperation in environmental and natural resource conservation. Forests in Sri Lanka contribute to the mitigation of global climate change through sequestrating a net amount of carbon dioxide and also maintaining carbon stocks as forests biomass. However, Sri Lankan society has to bear the opportunity cost of forest conservation by foregoing development opportunities. This paper explains an economic justification for international resource transfer for forest conservation in Sri Lanka. Through comparing estimated global and domestic benefits of forests and costs of forest conservation for mitigating global climate change, the study justifies the need for international cooperation for forest conservation in Sri Lanka.
