Effectiveness of newly released systemic fungicides applied as seed disinfectants to control blast for direct sowing of rice

The effectiveness of two newly released systemic fungicides (carpropamid and azxystrobin) applied as seed disinfectants to control blast was investigated for direct sowing of rice. Paddy field trials were conducted from 1998 to 2000. Seeds of rice cv. Doman-naka, whose level of partial resistance to blast is low, were treated with 40% wettable powder and 20% flowable carpropamid (4 g active ingredient, a.i./a), and 20% flowable azoxystrobin (6 g a.i./a). The seeds were then coated with 35% calcium peroxide powder (an oxygen supplier) twice the seed weight. Blast severity was assessed after sowing the seeds in the paddies. The seed coating of carpropamid was more effective in reducing blast development than that of azoxystrobin. However, carpropamid was less effective than submerged applications of probenazole (24g a.i./a) and pyroquilon (20 a.i./a) granules.
