A comparison of effect on growth of piglets by diets with acid-resistance oligosaccharides or chemotherapeutics

This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of acid-resistance oligosaccharides (mixed feed containing dextran) or chemotherapeutics supplemented diets on growth of piglets. A total of 24 piglets randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: (1) Group C-feeding basic diet (C); (2) Group A-feeding basic diet supplemented chemotherapeutics (A); (3) Group T-feeding basic diet supplemented 0.5% acid-resistance oligosaccharides (T). Piglets were given each diet from 3 to 9 weeks of age (3w to 9w). 1. A and T showed grater response on total live weight gain and feed conversion rate than C, though there were no significant difference among between 3 groups. 2. Number of Escherichia coliper gram of rectum content (E.coli) of A and T were lower than C, and A showed lowest E.coli for whole period. On the other hand, Number of Bifidobacterium per gram of rectum content (Bifido) of A showed significantly lower than the other groups at 4w and than A at 9w. T was maintained highest number of Bifido throughout the period. 3. Value of GOT and GPT in serum were normal range for all sample. However, values of A at 9w were higher than any other groups. On the other hand, Ferritin content in serum of A at 6w was slightly lower than that of any other groups. These results suggested that acid-resistance oligosaccharides could be substitute for chemotherapeutics.
