Soilless culture of tomatoes using anaerobic processed liquid cattlle manure

Processed liquid cattle manure (PLCM) released from the manure processing plant contains various amounts of mineral and organic components which are useful for plant growth, and which has been considered as a resource of fertilizers. The conventional aerobic PLCM have been processed by aeration under aerobic condition. Recently a new processing method under anaerobic condition has developed. Aerobic and anaerobic PLCM have the same feature of higher EC, pH, and Cl and K concentrations and lower H2PO4 concentration, compared with commercial nutrient solution. However, NO3-N and NH4-N concentrations are higher in anaerobic PLCM as compared with the aerobic PLCM. Therefore, the present experiment was conducted to clarify effects of the new anaerobic PLCM on the growth, yield and fruit quality of tomatoes grown in rockwool culture. Treatments were consisted of 1) Control (commercial nutrient solution), 2) anaerobic PLCM + macronutrient (+MN), and3) anaerobic PLCM+H2PO4 (+KP). Commercial nutrient solution (+MN) and KH2PO4 (+KP)were added into anaerobic PLC diluted with water to equalize total content of NO3-N and NH4-N with control. Plant growth was lesser in +KP than in +MN and control. Yield was greater in control, followed by +MN and lowest in +KP. Fruit quality was improved slightly in +MN and +KP compared with the control. The EC and Cl and K concentrations in drained solution were extremely high in +MN and +KP compared with control. It could be one of the causes for the reduction in plant growth and yield and improvement of fruit quality in +MN and+KP.
