Flowering characteristics and harvesting stage of 'Chiin Hwang No.1' mango [Mangifera indica]

It is difficult to determine the optimum harvest period for 'Chiin Hwang No 1' mango. A mature fruit of this particular variety is susceptible to internal breakdown, and it usually has to be harvested before ripening stage. Therefore in this trial the flowering characteristics were investigated, and the approximate fertilizaion period was outlined to produce a high quality fruit. This study also aimed to examine the quality of fruit harvested at different stages so as to determine the optimum harvest period. The following results were obtained. 1. The sex ratio of small flowers on an inflorescence was 67.0% for male flowers, 32.2% for hermaphrodite and 0.5% for malformed. Therefore, the proportion of the male flowers was twice that of hermaphrodites. 2. It was determined that the pollen had high fertility at the full bloom stage while fertility was low in the first stage of flowering (low temperature period). 3. The hermaphrodite and male flowers reached a peak of flowering in the middle of April. A peak of flowering generally corresponds to a peak of fertilization. It was hence judged that the fertilization period was around the 14th of April where it was in the full bloom stage. 4. Fruits under 600g contained more than 17% Brix degree as the total soluble solids after 125 days from the full bloom stage. Therefore, it indicates that those fruits are to be in good quality when harvested within 132 days after full bloom stage. 5. Although fruits over 600g tended to be low in sugar content, they contained more than Brix 15% Brix degree as the total soluble solid were harvested on the 132nd day from the full bloom stage.
