An analysis of grassland utilization and management issues in Aso area, Kumamoto prefecture [Japan]

This paper analyzes utilization and management of grassland in Aso area, Kumamoto Prefecture. In Aso area, grasslands have been used and maintained by stock farms. However, after the trade liberalization of beef, it has been difficult to maintain grassland because of deueasing number of the farmers. I adopt one-way layout ANOVA, multiple comparison, factor analysis, and discriminant analysis, in order to explicate the problem of utilization and management of grassland in Aso area. Samples were taken from questionnaires to farmers in the Aso area. These results can be summarized in to three points : 1) The results from factor analysis indicate that the issue of grassland utilization and management in Aso area can be classified under four topics : disaffection, works on grassland preservation, management of the common, and management of stock farm. And the results from one-way layout ANOVA indicate that farmers in Aso area characterize the calf price as the most difficult issue in grassland preservation. 2) The result of multiple comparisons indicates that the danger of work on grassland preservation, over growth of grass, finance, management of stock farm, and disaffection, have lead to interregional
