"Characteristics of a new sugar beet variety ""STOUT"" are described in comparison with ""ABEND"". 1. In the field infected with few Cercospora and Aphanomyces root rot, the root yield of ""STOUT"" slightly outperformed ""ABEND"" and the sugar yield was nearly the same as ""ABEND"", but sugar content was a little lower and the juice impurity was nearly the same as ""ABEND"". 2. In the field heavily infected with Cercospora and Aphanomyces root rot, ""STOUT"" outyielded ""ABEND"" with respect to root and sugar yield,and was nearly the same as ""ABEND"" with sugar content and juice impurity. 3. ""STOUT"" was resistant to Cercospora and root rot diseases including Aphanomyces root rot, ""STOUT"" was known to be adapted against ""environmental factors"". Especially, as in last year when severe Cercospora prevailed and in the fields where heavy Cercospora and Aphanomyces root rot occurred, ""STOUT"" demonstrated its advantagious char- acteristics and showed a steady production."
