Influence of towing speed and towing duration of small trawlers on survival of 0-age red sea bream Pagrus major: A preliminary study

"The red sea bream Pagrus major is one of the most important commercial fish in Mie Prefecture. It is desirable to advance fisheries-oriented resource management of this species, because a considerable number of 0-age fish caught with small trawlers attract only low prices at the fish markets or are dumped into the sea. This paper examines survival of 0-age fish in relation to towing speed and towing duration of small trawlers. It appeared that 0-age fish caught under the customary towing conditions (the towing speed and duration were 2.3-2.5 knots and 40-60 minutes respectively) had higher mortality rates than those caught under conditions of slower speed and shorter duration. However, the 0-age fish showed high mortality rates when caught together with many marine organisms such as starfish and sea urchins, even under the slower and shorter towing conditions."
