Leaf coloration in caladium cultivars during plant growth and development

Sixteen caladium cultivars were grown in the glass house of experimental farm, Kyoto university, Japan. Leaves of many caladium cultivars exhibit unusual leaf coloration form in which thelower leaves are mostly green and the upper leaves become gradually colored. Leaf color developmental patterns were determined from the lower to the upper leaves during growth and development of caladium plants. Multicolored foliage of caladium has been categorized into two groups as stable and unstable leaf color cultivars on the basis of consistency of leaf color with leaf number. A classification system was developed using leaf coloration, color stability and leaf shape for selection of marketable cultivars, which are most adaptable to pot culture. The system should assist in the marketing and breeding of caladium.
