The international trend of forest certification and its prospects in Japanese forestry

Nowadays, interest in 'Sustainable Forest Management' and 'Forest Certification' is growing in many parts of the world. In Japan, however, few steps have been taken towards adoption of these schemes. In this respect, Japan is falling behind the world trend. From now on, there is no doubt that this trend will affect the timber trade. As Japan is a major importer and consumer of timber, it should take steps to tackle this situation. The aim of this research was to assess the prospects for the spread of Forest Certification in Japan. To this end, an examination was made of global and domestic trends, the meaning of Forest Certification, and the reasons for its spread in other countries. It was concluded that Forest Certification is unlikely to become widespread in Japan, for the following reasons. Firstly, there is no compelling motivation for foresters to make the effort to obtain certification. Secondly, Forest Certification imposes strict standards of forest management that are difficult to attain under current forest management practices in Japan.
