"New sake-brewing rice cultivars ""Hyokei sake No.65"" and ""Hyokei sake No.66"" were developed. The characteristics of these cultivars are as follows: (1) ""Hyokei sake No.65"" was bred by crossing ""Hyogokitanishiki"" with ""Hidahomare"". The date of maturity is extremly early. The culm length is short and the plant type belongs to the partial panicle-number type. The degrees of resistance for lodging and for rice blast disease are high. Cold resistance is slightly stronger than that of ""Hyogokitanishiki"". The yield and the visual grain quality is slightly superior to ""Hyogokitanisiki"". (2) ""Hyokei sake No.66"" was bred by crossing ""Hyogokitanishiki"" with ""Ginnosei"". The date of maturity is extremly early. The culm length is medium and the plant type is belongs to the panicle-number type. The degree of lodging resistance is medium, and the resistance for rice blast disease is high. Cool weather resistance is stronger than that of ""Hyogokitanishiki"". The yielding ability is high and the visual grain quality is slightly superior to ""Hyogokitanisiki"". (3) Since new cultivars show higher resistance to cold weather and higher grain quality under high temperature conditions than ""Hyogokitanishiki"", they are expected to contribute to the stable production of sake-brewing rice in the northern part of Hyogo prefecture."
