Effect of ethanol addition on ensiling

"We investigated the antibiotic action of ethanol in the improvement of the fermentation quality of guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq. var. Natsukaze) silage. Two experi-ments were conducted to examine the effects 5f quantity of ethanol on silage quality (ex-periment 1) and on fermentation process (experiment 2). Guineagrass was cut at heading stage in the regrowth and as much as 550 grams of the material treated with ethanol were ensiled into a laboratory silo (1.0 liter polyethylene container). In experiment 1, ethanol was added at O, 0.5, 1, 3 or 5% on the fresh weight basis of the material, followed by storing for 36 days. In experiment 2, ethanol was added at O, 1 or 5% on the fresh weight basis of the material, followed by storing for 1, 3, 7, 14 or 36 days. After the silos were opened, samples were analyzed for pH, dry matter (DM), total nitrogen (TN), volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), organic acids, mono- and oligo-saccharide, starch and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). The material was also subjected to proximal analysis. The following results were obtained. Compared with the other treatments with lower concentration, 50/0 addition of ethanol significantly decreased pH value, VBN/TN, contents of butyric and acetic acids, and significantly increased lactic acid content and there were increases in mono- and oligo-saccharide, IVDMD and V-Score after 36 days of fermentation. In particular, the production of lac-tic acid was increased greatly after 7 days and there was a high production after 14 days. It was suggested"
