Dyeing of silk with carthamin isolated from hanamochi

A red pigment was isolated from Hanamochi - fermented safflower(Carthamus tinctorius L. ) florets were compressed into a form of rice cake - and identified to carthamin from the results of sup(1)H-NMR spectra determined in d sub(6)-DMSO. The optimized conformation of the three-dimensional structure of a model of carthamin - two glucosyl groups in the molecule were replaced with methyl groups - was calculated by means of the PM3 method. The VIS spectra of carthamin in an aqueous solution at various pH's were determined. Silk fabrics were dyed with carthamin at various initial pigment concentrations in dye-bath and the amounts of pigment on dyed silk fabrics were determined. The surface colors of the dyed silk fabrics were shown on the a sup(*)b sup(*) diagram of the L sup(*)a sup(*)b sup(*) colorimetric system.
