Upward movement of water in frozen soil under temperature gradient

Abstract By the laboratory test and field observation, the paper systemized upward movement of moisture in frozen soil under temperature gradients. In the laboratory test, soil column were cooled down from the top distribution of temperature and water content were measured. In addition, volumetric water content and temperature distribution were observed in the field. Result of both test showed the water movement from the lower layers to the surface in the frozen soils within the freezing period. From the results, water transport flux and potential gradient in the frozen soils, was calculated, then the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity during the process was estimated. The relation between the hydraulic conductivity and temperature obtained by column test and that obtained by field measurement was plotted on continuous positions. Besides, it was shown that hydraulic conductivity decreased accompanying with the decline of temperature. The change of hydraulic conductivity due to temperature showed the similar tendencies that of unfrozen water content and temperature.
