This report presents the results of tree inventory and vegetation survey in Mt. Elgon ecosystem. The field data collection was carried out in 126 temporry sample plots (81 in Mt. Elgon district and 45 in Trans Nzoia district). The major land cover in Mt. Elgon forests on the Kenya side was classified as indigenous forests, mixed forest/bamboo, bushland, grassland etc. Neoboutonia macrocalyx and Podocarpus latifolius are the most widely distributed tree species having been recorded in 23 and 20 percent respectively of all plots. An annotated checklist of the indigenous trees, shrubs and woody climbers of Mt. Elgon forests comprising 197 species and a list of 610 common herbs are compiled. The communities adjacent to Mt. Elgon forests rely extensively on the forests for poles, firewood, medicines and honey production. There are 21 species that are commonly used for non-timber forest products in Mt. Elgon ecosystem.
