Effect of interstock on the growth of 'Fuji'/Marubakaido apple tree [Malus pumila]

SUMMARY The effect of different interstocks grafted with 'Fuji' / Marubakaido (M. prunifolia var. ringo) on the shoot growth and the dry matter production was investigated using M. 26, M. 9, M. 27 and M. 26 + 'Tsugaru' for two years. The number of shoots and the shoot length were the highest in the control tree (without interstock) , and there was no significant difference among the other interstocks. The relative changes in the dry weight increment (dry weight increment/dry weight at planting) was the control > M. 26 > M. 9 > M. 27 = M. 26 + 'Tsugaru'. There was a significant positive correlation between the relative changes in the dry weight of the top part and the root. The proportion of the dry mass allocated to the root was higher in the trees having a higher relative change value of the total dry mass. The dry mass-production efficiency of the leaves (total dry mass increment/dry weight of leaves) in M. 26 + 'Tsugaru' was significantly higher than for the other treatments, and there were no significant differences in the other treatments. The top/root ratio in the control tree was significantly higher than the other treatments. These results showed that the interstock of the dwarf rootstock decreased the tree growth, which is related to the growth of the root.
