Genetic variation in Faidherbia albida : implications for conservation of genetic resources and tree improvement

Material from 11 provenances representing the central, western and southern parts of the distribution range of Faidherbia albida was studied. Pod and seed characteristics were measured and seedling development investigated both under normal and controlled environmental conditions. Field performance was evaluated for 2 years in 3 experimental plantations established along the rainfall gradient in the Sudan and isozyme patterns at 11 loci were analysed. Based on the results, recommendations pertaining to conservation, improvement and utilisation of the species gene resources were made. The evolutionary history of the species origin and migration and the present centre of diversity were inferred.
