Man has utilized forests and their products since time immemorial. Sustainable management of these resources is imperative. It is becoming increasingly important that present management strategies look to conserve the resources they use, since reports show that the worlds demand for timber and wood products has been growing at a rate of 1 to 2% per year over the last decade (FAO 1993). This along with the large deforestation rates in the tropical hemisphere, currently estimated at 1.2% annually (Sharma 1991), has severe implications. This thesis looks at the plight, which faces many valuable tropical timbers and considers the sustainable management and policy initiative options available for tropical timber tree species, whilst outlining the information needed to effectively conserve and manage a species, using Dalbergia melanoxylon as a case study. From Dalbergia melanoxylon comes the worlds most valuable traded timber, which is highly prized by the international music industry. Dalbergia melanoxylon is also of significant cultural, environmental and economic importance where it grows. However, very little is known about the species and there is even less published literature available. This thesis collates the information, which is currently available into one document and tentatively comments on the options available in order to secure the future of Dalbergia melanoxylon and the trade it supports.
