In search of effective ways to compost municipal wastes

A series of tests were conducted in a garage dumpsite in Luisiana, Laguna [Philippines] and in the Department of Soil Science [University of the Philippines at Los Baños, College, Laguna, Philippines] greenhouse to determine the effectiveness of commercial and natural activators in hastening decomposition of market wastes and in controlling foul odor and insect and fly infestation. The results showed that the commercial microbial preparations BC-28, BK-10, and BK-100 markedly increased decomposition rate, reduced foul odor as well as insect, maggot and fly infestations in both test sites. The natural activator, kakawate (Gliricidia) leaves somewhat increased decay rate also presumably due to their high nitrogen content. Supplementary tests on rice straw-chicken manure mixture showed that more frequent watering, mixing and chopping of straw significantly increased decomposition rate of the compost pile.
