The lichen family Cladoniaceae (Lecanoromycetes) is represented by five genera in Southeast Asia, viz, Calathaspis (1 species), Cladia (species), Cladonia (incl. Cladina) (ca. 50 species), Gymnoderma (1 species), and Thysanothecium (1 species). Only the species composition of New Guinea and New Caledonia are relatively well-known. Less complete data exist from Thailand, The Philippines, Sabah, Peninsular Malaysia, and Java. No or very scattered data on Cladoniaceae have been published from the other areas in Southeast Asia. The reports published about 60-150 years ago are usually outdated due to many recent changes in the taxonomy and nomenclature of Cladoniaceae. Most of the species are widespread tropical or temperate taxa. Cladonia fruticulosa is perhaps the most frequent but often overlooked species in the region, containing three major chemotypes. The endemic species include at least Calathaspis devexa, Cladonia luzonensis, C. melaleuca, C. papuana, C. phyllopoda, C. siamea, and C. tenuicaulis. In addition, two new species shall be described from recent collections made on Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah. The presence of more new species is apparent in the existing collections, and many of the known species belong to intricate taxonomic complexes which are still poorly understood.
