The treatment performance of the sewage treatment oxidation pond of aNigerian University was assessed in terms of pH, electrical conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and nutrient removal from the influent. These parameters were simultaneously monitored in the receiving stream, influent and effluents. Significant pollution of the receiving stream wasindicated for BOD5, nitrate, phosphate, suspended solids and pH. The levels ofthese parameters in the sewage effluent exceeded the Nigerian FederalEnvironmental Protection Agency tolerance limits for the effluents to bedischarged through public sewers into a stream. In addition, the levels ofsome trace metals: Pb, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cd were also determined in the influent, effluent of the oxidation pond and the receiving stream. High mean levels ofPb, Zn and Fe were observed in the receiving stream and exceeded the WHOguideline levels for drinking water and for protection of aquatic ecosystem. This unfortunately, may affect the 'health' of the aquatic ecosystem in thereceiving stream and the health of the rural dwellers who use the streamwater directly for domestic purposes without treatment.
