Antioxidant properties of the Nigerian Piliostigma species

In this study a comparative antioxidant activity of the leafextracts of P. reticulatum and P. thonningii have been evaluatedusing the DPPH free radical scavenging assay. The butanol fractionof P. reticulatum exhibited the highest activity (EC50 = 10.27 plusminus 0.02 mug mL-1), while crude extract of P. thoninngii had theleast activity (EC50 = 50.94 plus minus 0.27 mug mL-1). These resultssuggested strong antioxidant activity potentials of the plants butless than ascorbic acid.
