Performance of sweet orange varieties in Peshawar [Pakistan]

Twenty sweet orange varieties viz., Olinda Valencia, Salustiana,Sanguinely, Moro Blood, Hinckely, Hamlin, Tarocco, Valencia Late, Marr'sEarly, Jaffa, Cambell Valencia, Pine apple, Joppa, Succari, Kozan, Trablus,Navelina, Blood Red, Musambi and Ruby Red were studied under the soiland climatic conditions of Agricultural Research Institute, Tarnab,Peshawar during the year 2002. Data were recorded on the morphologicalcharacteristics of tree vigour, flowering, fruit set, maturity and yield.Maximum plant height of 3.82 m was found in sanguinely, plantcanopy/spread of 4.6 m2, number of flowers per twig (22.3), yield pertree (100.2 kg) and minimum percent fruit drop 14.3 were found invariety Hinckely. Hamlin gained maximum shoot growth of 77 cm. Musambiwas the earliest maturing variety. Pineapple produced maximum numberof fruit per tree (610). The lowest tree height of 2.0m was noted inBlood Red. Lesser number of days to full bloom was observed in Hamlin(7.1) jaffa (5.9) and sanguinely (5.7). Smaller shoot growth of 29.6 cmwas gained by Cambell Valencia and low yield of 8.4 Kg was produced byNavelina.
