Lupin seeds as a feedstuff alternative to meat and bone meals in pig and poultry nutrition

The demand for high protein feed stuffs of plant origin increased considerably after withdrawal of meat and bone meals from pig and poultry nutrition. The suitability of seeds of 3 lupin species as the components of pig and poultry diet differs. Yellow lupin can be used for both species of animals, white lupin due to higher fat content is well utilised by poultry but may be poorly accepted by pigs, while narrow-leaved lupin is recommended for older pigs rather, due to higher fibre content. In diets containing lupins instead of meat and bone meals the content of minerals should be carefully balanced. Nutritional value of lupin seeds may be increased by dehulling, while supplementation with exogenous carbohydrases is rather ineffective
