Moisture dynamics in reclaimed land of the Belchatow brown coal mine (Poland)external dumping ground

The investigation was carried out to determine the soil moisture dynamics in the surface layer of dumping ground during the period from March to November in 1979-88. The results have been compared with those obtained in an arable field. Soil moisture was analysed in respect of its satisfying the water demands of plants. In dumping ground the increase in soil moisture content due to increased amount of precipitation was somewhat lower than in the arable field. Under the climatic conditions of Belchatow, in 0-240 cm layer of dumping ground the water relations appeared to be suitable for a successful development of plants
