Determination of caffeic acid as indicator of phenolic acid in purple coneflower, yarrow, great plantain as immunostimulative nutrition additives

Recently, addition of herbs to fodder mixtures for animals as immunomodulating agents has become very popular. However, due to the specificity of both the dose and the way of their submission to animals, the standardization process upon active chemicals is necessary. Phenolic acids content in plant raw material determined on the basis of caffeic acid percentage, can be one of the indices. Phenolic acids content re-calculated into caffeic acid was determined in coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and great plantain (Plantago lanceolata) through analysis of caffeic acid level by means of high potential capillary electrophoresis (HPCE) and spectrophotometry using Arnov's reagent. Caffeic acid content amounted to 80 micrograms/cubic cm in con decoction, 67 micrograms/cubic cm in great plantain decoction, 55 micrograms/cubic cm in yarrow decoction, and 71 micrograms/cubic cm in purple coneflower extract. On the basis of caffeic acid percentage in polyphenolic acids, their amount in raw material applied as an addition to fodder was evaluated.
