Analysis of sewage treatment efficiency in domestic wastewater treatment plants with a ground/plant/bed
Jozwiakowski, K.(Akademia Rolnicza, Lublin (Poland). Katedra Melioracji i Budownictwa Rolniczego)
The results of 3-years' investigations concerning the efficiency of pollution removal in five domestic wastewater treatment plants with ground/plant bed are presented in the work. The studied objects are subsurface flow systems with willow Salix viminalis. They are used only to purify domestic in the determination of BOD5, COD, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total suspended solids, potassium and other pollution. The treatment efficiency in investigated beds in generally good in the case of BOD5, COD and total suspended solids removal, but not satisfactory in the case of nutrient removal. The efficiency of biogenic element removal in the summer season was greater than in the winter period. The studied sewage treatment systems are a possible ecological alternative used in developing rural areas to protect soils as well as surface water and groundwater resources
