Potential of organic agriculture in Syria: The case of olive and olive oil sub-sector
2004
El-Toubaji, S.
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of the introduction of organic agriculture in Syria through the current situation of the olive oil sub-sector A field survey has been carried out in two Syrian regions, Aleppo and Idleb, submitting a structured questionnaire to some representative olive farmers and to some key experts working in the olive and olive oil field in the country. The results show that in spite of some constraints that hamper the work, partial conversion of this sub-sector to organic is possible, taking into consideration the current practices, the present economic results and the adequate technicians' and even farmers' educational level, their attitude to innovation and the increasing awareness for environment conservation and food safety by the Government and other public bodies. Organic agriculture can contribute to increasing the olive farmers' income, through decreasing costs, because of the relatively low external inputs needs and giving Syrian olive oil good marketing opportunities in the domestic and international markets.
