Phenolic profile and antioxidant activity of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) ripe fruit
2003
Mansouri, A.
The aim of this study was to determine the phenolic profile of seven different varieties of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) ripe fruit from Algeria (Akerbouche, Deglet-Nour, Ougherouss, Tafiziouine Tantbouchte, Tazizaout and Tazerzait), by LC-DAD-MS (ESI+), to investigate their respective antioxidant activity by the DPPH method and estimate their total phenolic content using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The total phenolics content was in the range of 2.49+-0.01 to 8.36+-0.60 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE). The Tantbouchte variety presented the highest significant value followed by the Deglet-Nour variety, whereas the varieties Tazizaout and Ougherouss showed the lowest significant values. The ripe date palm fruit was shown to possess an antioxidant activity, giving values of AE from 0.08+-0.01 to 0.22+-0.01. The Tantbouchte variety has the highest significant antiradical efficiency followed by the variety Deglet-Nour, while the varieties Akerbouche, Tazizaout and Ougherouss showed the lowest significant values. The phenolic content and the antiradical efficiency of the different varieties where highly correlated (Rsup(2)=0.975). All the varieties were found to contain mainly p-courmaric, ferulic and sinapic acids and some cinnamic acid derivatives. Three different isomers of dactilyferic acid were detected. Different types of flavonoids were identified, mainly flavone glycosides, flavanone glycosides, and flavonol glycosides. The Deglet-Nour, Tazizaout and Ougherouss varieties presented high flavonoid content, whereas the variety Tazerzait was the poorest.
