Strategy and Methodology of Research on Desertification in the Sudan: Energy Sector
2004
Ali, S.S.,Ministry of Science and Technology, Khartoum (Sudan). National Center for Research
The strategy and methods of research in the field of energy have to be tackled in an integrated comprehensive way within the triangle of energy-development- and environment. This implies maximization of the utilization of available energy resources for the sustainable development in an environmentally sound manner. Thus the strategy of scientific research has to be directed towards resource exploration, development of conservation measures and introduction and adaptation of the most recent efficient technologies and techniques. The research priorities in the energy sector with emphasis on desertification must be dealt with in three major aspects:- (1) The shift away from dependency on biomass energy to petroleum derivatives and new and renewable energy technologies and techniques, (2) Effective activities to develop, solar, wind, and new biotechnology energy systems, (3) To set up polices, legislative rules and regulations to impose certain measures related to the minimization of the environmental impacts during the preparation of any feasibility study for large power stations like dams, nuclear reactors..etc. The expected dramatic change in the energy balance and the shift away from woody biomass (fuelwood) will contribute a lot in mitigating drought and desertification and, instead, green plant cover will be reinstated in the savanna and equatorial zones
