A proposed plan of action for research on desertification in the Sudan: Kassala and Red Sea States

The Red Sea and Kassala States suffer from the impact of desertification which is quite clear in the case of the Red Sea especially when coupled with the frequent waves of drought, and human irrational use of natural resources such as overgrazing and tree cutting. Kassala State has been described as an agricultural state because of its relatively good natural resources. For the Red Sea the pattern of pastoralism is predominant and camels and goats are the main animals raised by pastoralists who also practice some sort of subsistence cultivation along the intermittent water courses. The organized agriculture is represented by Delta Tokar and Khor Arba'at Schemes. The research work will concentrate on issues related to soil, water and crop relationship, crop productivity, and communal range and forests. Kassala State has been divided into five research profiles which can be illustrated as followss: the Gash Scheme and the intermittent water courses, "taras" cultivation, El Sawagi 'horticultural activities', New Halfa Scheme, and the natural vegetation cover. For the Red Sea three profiles have been identified as follows: Delta Tokar and Arba' at Schemes; intermittent water courses; and the natural vegetation cover. The proposed strategy will achieve the following objectives: assign top priority to desertification research in the fields of agriculture and natural resources; design a desertification research map for the affected states; and provide scientific information which will assist planners in laying out projects for combating desertification. The duration for the proposed strategy will be ten years divided over two phases each of which will be five years. Research methodology will follow the conventional approaches in addition to the traditional knowledge of the resource-users
